The exhibition Passage to the Future: Art from a New Generation in Japan is focused upon the Japanese art emerging in the beginning of the 21st century. In the 1990s, there was a great shift in world economic and political outlook, and many people responded to this change by turning away from large issues, concentrating on a smaller, more intimate part of life. In contemporary art too, artists began to pay more attention to the day-to-day, focusing on the expression of feelings and personal perception.
These two sculptors use two different materials for their works. Joko Dwi Avianto utilizes bamboo, reminiscent of our natural world, growing as though uninfluenced by technology; while Hedi Hariyanto works with soda cans, a product of our industrial world (the combination of aluminum cans and soda pop). Both artists address the states of change at work around us. The natural world is being pushed aside by the advances of industry; while on the other hand, the industrial world continues to provide for our creature comforts.
