As an Opening
Dear readers and audiences, with your attention and support, the planning and implementation of Komunitas Salihara programs are getting better and better. You are now holding our calendar of events for January to March 2012. This is a three month calendar and we will continue in this way from now on; as you know, last year each of our event calendars covered only two months. Program preparations by our Curatorial Board will be more long range in the future. In this way, we believe, art productions on the one hand and audience interest on the other, will be more seriously incited.
Most of the events this year will be presented as packets, or they can be called mini-festivals, to make it easier for audiences to become more intimately involved in the types of arts or themes over a certain time period. For example, Salihara Jazz Buzz, held for two weekends in January-February will present in succession the groups of Dony Koeswinarno, Tohpati Ario Hutomo, Bintang Indrianto, and Dewa Budjana.
In March, you can enjoy the theme on how the body is translated in different cultural environments. There is a series of four lectures titled Erotica and Human Desire by expert-writers; and a photo exhibition titled Tubuh dan Bentuk by Nico Dharmajungen.
In April-May we will present a series of events titled Honoring Mother Earth, in which women artists from varied disciplines and backgrounds will display their visions on womanhood and the environment. The public lecture series that you can enjoy are on virtue in Classical European philosophy (April-May), linguistics and the philosophy of language (June), and mysticism and Islam (August, Ramadhan).
In June, we will present the Adapted Theater Scripts Forum: Understanding the Others. In this forum, leading groups in Indonesia will perform scripts by, among others, Ugo Betti, Slavomir Mrozek, August Strindberg, and Samuel Beckett. This is an offering of skilled acting and directing which theater lovers have eagerly awaited.
The series of events this year opens with the art exhibition Rupa Belanja, Rupa Kota (January)—a display of commissioned works by three groups of artists about urban culture in Bandung, Jakarta, and Jogjakarta—which will culminate in the Festival Salihara in September-October. The Festival Salihara (this is the fourth) is a celebration of arts performances held every two years providing a combination of peak events: a number of performing groups from, for example, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Indonesia, will present their world class pieces.
We believe that the interests, knowledge, and aspirations of audiences expand in accordance with the increasingly high level of challenges and complexity in our lives. Our series of events has been designed to address that. By preserving innovativeness and diversity, we are all striving for a healthier and more enlightened life as a nation.
We would like to thanks all of you—our audiences, friends, partner institutions, sponsors, donors, media, artists and all those involved in the events—who have supported us in presenting no less than 150 performances, exhibitions, lectures and discussions since August 2008. And,
Happy New Year 2012.
