
Tony was born in Malang in 1956. As a composer he has often collaborated with artists from other disciplines: theater, film, dance, and literature. One of his music compositions, Dongeng Sebelum Tidur (1992) for soprano and mixed ensemble inspired by the poetry of Goenawan Mohamad was played by The New Julliard Ensemble in 1996 at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, New York. Autumnal Steps (1996) a work for full orchestra, had its debut performance by The New Julliard Ensemble, and in 1997 was played by the Seattle Creative Orchestra. Requiem for Strings (1998) was performed by Deutsche Kammerphilharmonic Bremen in Jakarta, and in 1999 was played by Fellows of The Tanglewood Music Centre at the Festival of Contemporary Music, Tanglewood with conductor Tan Dun. In 2005, this piece was played by Den Haag National Orchestra, the Netherlands. Tony has written two operas with libretto by Goenawan Mohamad, King’s Witch and Kali. Currently he is preparing his third opera, Tan Malaka, also with the libretto by Goenawan Mohamad. At Komunitas Salihara Tony is the curator for music and dance.
