
Goenawan is the founder and former editor in chief of the news magazine Tempo (1971-1998). He is also known as a poet, essayist, and public intellectual. Collections of his essays include Seks, Sastra, Kita (1980); Kekuasaan dan Kesusastraan (1993); Catatan Pinggir (now in its seventh volume); Setelah Revolusi Tak Ada Lagi (2001), Kata, Waktu (2001); Eksotopi (2002), and Tuhan dan Hal-hal yang Tak Selesai (2009). His essays have been translated into English by Jennifer Lindsay and published as Sidelines (1994) and Conversations with Difference (2002).
Goenawan has published six books of poetry: Parikesit (1971), Interlude (1973), Asmaradana (1992), Misalkan Kita Di Sarajevo (1998), Sajak-sajak Goenawan Mohamad: 1961-2001 (2001) and Goenawan Mohamad: Selected Poems (2004), edited by Laksmi Pamuntjak. He has also written the libretto for three contemporary operas: Kali, The King’s Witch, and Tan Malaka. Besides writing the scripts for the shadow puppet plays, Wisanggeni and Alap-alapan Surtikanti, Goenawan has written scripts for theater: Surti dan Tiga Sawunggaling and Visa. Two dance performances Goenawan has directed are Panji Sepuh and Dirada Meta, a classical dance from the Mangkunegaran Palace.
