Eko studied language and literature at the University of Indonesia.  He worked as a journalist for the magazine Optimis (1984-1985), managing editor of Berita Buku (Ikapi Pusat, 1987-1989), and editor at the publisher Pustaka Utama Grafiti (1989-1997).  He also worked as a book editor at KITLV (Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal, Land- en Volkenkunde) Jakarta (1997-2003). In 1997 Eko joined Komunitas Utan Kayu which in 2008 became Komunitas Salihara.  In 2006 he published a book he had worked on his own to compile for over ten years, Tesaurus Bahasa Indonesia.
