
Asikin was born in Jambi, South Sumatra. From 1985-1991, he studied at and graduated from the Department of Art and Design, Bandung Institute of Technology. He conducted research on the New Visual Arts Movement in Indonesia. Then he became a journalist at the weekly news magazine Tempo (West Java Bureau), until the magazine was banned in 1994. In 1996, Asikin became the curator for Galeri Lontar, Jakarta, and in the same year he took part in a short course on curatorship at a number of galleries and museums in Tokyo, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, and Kyoto, under the sponsorship of The Japan Foundation. Now he is the visual arts curator at Galeri Salihara.
